Sales tax in Quebec
Quebec charges two taxes: the 5 percent federal GST and the 9.975 percent Quebec Sales Tax (QST), for a combined 14.975 percent. Since 2013 the QST applies to the same pre-tax base as the GST, so it is no longer compounded on the GST-included amount. On a 100 dollar sale, GST is 5 dollars and QST is 9.975 dollars, both calculated on the 100 dollars.
Revenu Quebec administers both the GST and the QST in the province, so most Quebec businesses file a combined return. Getting the pre-tax base right matters, which is exactly why this calculator never compounds QST on top of GST.
