In aerospace, the paperwork counts as much as the part itself. A shipment arriving without a certificate of conformity, without material certification traced back to the mill heat, and without evidence that the first article was inspected against the correct drawing revision simply gets rejected. Standard ERP configurations track quantities and costs well enough but drop the certification chain entirely, which is why quality staff end up running a parallel folder system for every customer purchase order. Odoo can carry heat traceability, inspection evidence and controlled access just fine, but only if lot tracking, Quality and PLM are designed around the customer flow-down from the start rather than bolted on afterward.
Can you trace a finished part back to the mill heat number?
A customer flags a concern on a shipped assembly and asks for the raw material certification. The bar stock had come in against a purchase order and been cut into several different jobs, and the only link between the mill certificate and the specific finished serials lived on a whiteboard and a paper traveller.
Raw material gets tracked by lot right at receipt, with the heat number serving as the lot reference and the mill certificate attached directly to it, and Odoo MRP then consumes that lot into work orders so the genealogy is captured without anyone having to record it by hand. From any finished serial, you can pull the full upstream tree back to the heat, and going the other direction, you can list every part made from a suspect heat, turning what used to be a shipment-wide review into a targeted one.
Is first article inspection managed outside the ERP?
FAI packages typically only get assembled in spreadsheets and PDFs once the customer starts chasing them. Nobody can say for certain whether the current run is still covered by the last FAI, or whether a process change, a new tool or a drawing revision has quietly invalidated it, so parts end up shipping on an assumption rather than proof.
Inspection plans live on Odoo Quality control points with measured characteristics tied to the drawing revision held in Odoo PLM, so the inspection is bound to that revision rather than just the part number. Engineering change orders flag automatically when a change calls for a new first article, and results, attachments and sign-off all live on the manufacturing order that produced the article, ready to export straight into the customer package.
Can you prove who had access to controlled technical data?
Drawings, specifications and program data typically sit on a shared drive that most of the company can reach. ITAR or controlled goods work, though, requires demonstrating access control by person and nationality, and a shared folder offers no defensible record of who actually opened what.
Record rules and access groups in Odoo restrict controlled projects, documents, BOMs and manufacturing orders to a named list of authorised users, and attachment access follows the same rules automatically. Add document versioning in PLM plus Odoo's logging of reads and writes on restricted models, and you end up with a full per-user trail. Odoo isn't an ITAR certification in itself, rather it's the access control and evidence layer your compliance program can stand on.

Does Odoo support AS9100 requirements?
Odoo supports the operational evidence that AS9100 actually asks for, including traceability, control of nonconforming product, calibration, configuration management, competence records and supplier control. Since the standard certifies your quality system rather than your software, Odoo functions as the tool that produces the evidence, not as a certification you can simply buy.

Can Odoo handle ITAR and controlled data?
Odoo gives you the access control primitives, things like user groups, record rules, restricted document access and audit logging on sensitive models. What it doesn't give you out of the box is a full compliance boundary: hosting location, personnel screening, encryption at rest and a technology control plan all sit outside the software itself, which is why self-hosting or a US or Canadian sovereign environment is usually required.

Does Odoo do CAD-driven nesting or CNC program management?
No, it doesn't. Odoo won't perform nesting, CAM programming or CAD file interpretation, and it can't calculate optimal sheet or bar utilisation. What it does is store CAD files as versioned attachments and receive outputs, cut lists and cycle times among them, from your CAM system. Nesting and toolpath work stays where it belongs, in the specialist software, integrated with Odoo purely for material and job data.

How long does an aerospace Odoo implementation take?
Plan for something in the range of 16 to 22 weeks. A build-to-print machine shop with a small customer set can reach go-live around the 16-week mark, while multiple programs, heat-level traceability, first article workflows, controlled data segregation and a customer portal push that closer to 22 weeks. Either way, quality sign-off on the traceability design needs to happen before configuration even starts.
