A solar job isn't simply a sale that ships, it's a project carrying a permit queue, an inspection, a long-lead purchase order, and a warranty that outlives the crew who installed it. Generic ERP systems recognize revenue the moment it ships and don't reveal the true cost until closeout, months after the change orders have already been absorbed. By that point, the same pricing lesson has already repeated itself across the next twenty quotes.
Does the Job Still Make Money After the Change Orders?
Pricing started from a preliminary design. Then a structural upgrade showed up, followed by a second day of crew time, a redesign after the utility review, and racking that never appeared in the original take-off. The erosion stays invisible until the job gets invoiced and closed out.
With Odoo Project, each install gets its own analytic account, and purchase orders, timesheets, subcontractor bills and inventory issues all post to it as they happen. Because committed cost sits right beside actual cost while the job is still open, a margin problem becomes something you decide on mid-build instead of a lesson learned at closeout.
How Do You Commit to an Install Date When Inverters Run 16 Weeks Out?
Panels and inverters get ordered against a forecast, arrive on a container's schedule, and end up consumed by whichever job happens to be shouting loudest that week. Crews get booked around stock that's already been quietly reallocated to some other site.
Odoo Purchase tracks supplier lead times and reordering rules, while Inventory reserves specific serialized inverters and modules for the project that will actually use them. Landed cost then folds freight, duty and tariffs into the module cost, so the figure hitting the job reflects what the equipment truly cost to land rather than just the manufacturer's invoice price.
Who Owns the Warranty Claim Three Years After Commissioning?
Once the array is commissioned, the crew moves on, and the serial numbers live on as nothing more than a photo of a pallet label. When an inverter fails within warranty, proving the install date and identifying the exact unit ends up taking longer than fixing it.
Odoo Barcode captures panel and inverter serials at the moment of install, tied to the site, so every asset carries its manufacturer, batch, install date and commissioning record. Any later service runs as a Field Service work order referencing that same serial, while Odoo Sign keeps the signed handover and warranty pack on the same customer record.
What Do We Deliver for Solar and Renewable Installers?
- Per-install project costing that shows committed versus actual cost while the build is underway
- Long-lead procurement with reservations and landed cost tracked on imported equipment
- Panels and inverters serialized and captured at install using Barcode
- Milestones for permits and inspections, plus commissioning handover and warranty service

01
Does Odoo do PV design or read production data from inverters?
No on both, and Odoo shouldn't pretend otherwise. Shading analysis, string design and yield modelling belong in Aurora, HelioScope or PVsyst, while production monitoring belongs in the SolarEdge, Enphase or Fronius portal, since Odoo has no native way to ingest that telemetry. What Odoo does own is the commercial and operational side: quoting, procurement, job cost, install, serials and service.
02
Can Odoo track permits, interconnection and inspection milestones?
Yes, as milestones and deadlines on the project, complete with owners, activities and documents attached. Filing itself happens outside Odoo though: interconnection applications, AHJ permit portals and incentive programme submissions all get handled elsewhere, with the project simply recording the submission, the reference number and the approval date so the schedule stays honest.
03
Can we run residential and commercial installs in the same system?
Yes, though the two usually call for different templates. Residential work behaves more like a fast, repeatable project built around a standard kit and a short cycle, while commercial and utility-scale work brings milestone billing, retainage, subcontractor management and heavier procurement. Both live in Odoo Project on the same underlying costing model, which is exactly what makes the blended margin comparable.
04
How long does a solar implementation take?
Most installers go live somewhere between 10 and 16 weeks. Residential-only operations running a small equipment catalogue land at the shorter end, while adding commercial project billing, retainage, a design tool integration and serialized warranty tracking pushes things closer to 16. We typically start with quoting and job costing before moving on to service.
