Who Odoo Planning is for

  • Service businesses scheduling field crews and technicians
  • Retail and hospitality teams running weekly shift rotas
  • Manufacturing teams allocating operators across work centers
  • Teams replacing Monday.com, Float, Resource Guru, or paper schedules

Top features

Drag-and-drop gantt

Visual schedule with employees on the Y axis and time on the X. Click to add a shift, drag to move, resize to extend. Group by role, department, or location.

Conflict detection

Overlapping shifts highlighted in red. Time-off requests block scheduling automatically. Working-hour limits (legal max, contract terms) enforced.

Recurring shifts

Define repeat patterns, weekly, biweekly, monthly. Roll forward with a single click for the next month or quarter. Holidays auto-excluded.

Employee self-service

Staff see their schedule on the Odoo mobile app or via a public share link. Request swaps, claim open shifts, or submit time-off, manager approves or declines inline.

Open shifts

Publish open shifts for staff to claim on a first-come or qualifications-matched basis. Auto-fill rules pick the highest-priority qualified employee available.

Hours to payroll

Scheduled hours flow into Odoo Timesheets and HR. Actual vs scheduled variance reports. Overtime alerts when an employee crosses the configured threshold.

Skill-based assignment

Tag employees with skills (welding certification, language, license types). Schedule only matching staff to shifts requiring those skills. Mismatches blocked at save.

Multi-location and multi-team

Schedule across locations, teams, or projects with a single canvas. Cost-center allocation flows through to Project, Field Service, and Manufacturing modules.

Representative use cases

Field-service crew dispatch

Dispatcher schedules technicians against work orders for the week. Planning auto-blocks vacation requests, surfaces conflicts when a technician is double-booked, and pushes the schedule to each technician's mobile app overnight. No more morning whiteboard meetings.

Restaurant weekly rota

GM publishes a rota for 18 staff across kitchen and front-of-house. Open shifts surface to staff who claim them by phone. Time-off requests block scheduling. Hours export to payroll on Sunday night.

Manufacturing operator allocation

Plant scheduler allocates operators to work centers per shift based on MRP demand. Skill-based assignment prevents an unqualified operator from being booked on a precision CNC. Scheduled hours feed the cost-per-unit calculation in MRP.

Odoo Planning FAQ

  • 01Can employees see their schedule on their phone?

Yes, via the Odoo mobile app (iOS and Android) or a public share link emailed to them weekly. Mobile view shows their shifts, lets them request swaps, claim open shifts, and submit time-off. No Odoo account needed if you use share links.

  • 02Does Planning enforce labor law limits (max hours, mandatory breaks)?

Working-hour limits are configurable per contract or employee, and the scheduler blocks shifts that would exceed them. Mandatory-break rules trigger validation. For jurisdiction-specific rules (FLSA overtime, Quebec daily-rest), configure thresholds during implementation.

  • 03Can Planning replace Monday.com for our 40-person service business?

For shift and resource scheduling tied to operations (jobs, work orders, projects), yes. Monday.com is more flexible as a general work tracker. Many service businesses adopt Planning for the operating side and keep Monday for marketing or one-off projects.

  • 04Do hours flow to payroll automatically?

Scheduled hours flow into Odoo Timesheets and from there to Odoo HR for payroll. Actual vs scheduled variance is captured when staff clock in/out via the mobile app or POS. Overtime triggers alerts before payroll runs.
